Sony shows self-powering solar lampshade

Tagged Under :

Sony is showing off an advanced lampshade made up of dye-sensitized solar cells that capture light and convert it into electricity at the Eco-Products 2008 show in Japan. The prototype is called Hana-Akari and uses what Sony calls is a process similar to photosynthesis to capture energy from any light source. Sony develops 12.25-megapixel phone camera

Tagged Under :

Sony  said it has broken a new barrier in cellphone cameras through an update to its Exmor sensors. The company has shrunk the pixel size to 1.4µm and now says it can produce a 12.25-megapixel, 28mm equivalent CMOS camera small enough to fit in some cellphones. The unit gives a cellphone the image quality and detail of a modern point-and-shoot camera, according to the company. It also operates quickly enough to shoot 1080p video as quickly as 27 frames per second and 720p at a TV-level 30 frames per second as long as the processor and storage are also capable of the same speed.

Sony Blu-spec brings Blu-ray to CD audio

Tagged Under : ,

Sony Music Entertainment’s Japanese branch today unveiled a new disc standard that aims to bring the company’s lessons from Blu-ray to music CDs. Blu-spec uses the blue lasers that would normally master Blu-ray movies to cut CDs more accurately than would be possible with red lasers. In tandem with the use of polymer plastic for the discs themselves, the format should improve the quality of audio CDs while remaining compatible with existing CD players; the latter has been a weakness of Super Audio CD and other defunct sound formats. The first Blu-spec discs are due to reach Japan on Christmas Eve and will focus mostly on classical and jazz music, including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue; 60 titles in all will be available from Sony. The company is hoping to foster cross-label support from rivals such as EMI and Universal that have developed their own proprietary approaches to CDs.
